CHECKED-IN FREE BAGGAGE
For the free baggage allowance Lufthansa uses the standard ‘piece’ concept.
On all Lufthansa-operated flights the following basic rules apply to free baggage:
Free baggage allowances vary depending on service class.
The allowances are differentiated by the number of free bags allowed and the permitted weight of each bag. Please note the free baggage allowance shown on your ticket or Passenger.
Free baggage allowance at a glance
First Class:
3 bags each weighing up to 32 kg (70lbs)
Business Class:
2 bags each weighing up to 32 kg (70lbs)
Premium Economy Class:
2 bags each weighing up to 23 kg (50lbs)
Economy Class:
1 bag weighing up to 23 kg (50lbs)

The following flat rates are incurred for a second bag (up to a maximum of 23 kg (50lbs)). The flat rates are dependent on the country where the journey begins and apply per route:

75 EUR / 100 USD for journeys solely within Europe
75 EUR / 100 USD for journeys to/from North and Central America
150 EUR / 200 USD for all other journeys

Additional sports bag* for all classes on all routes except to/from USA, Mexico and Central America:
1 piece of ski equipment
SWISS Golf Traveller Members:
1 piece of golf equipment
* The maximum weight of an additional piece of ski or snowboarding equipment must be within the relevant weight limits of the respective travel class.

3 bags each weighing up to 32 kg (70lbs)
Business Class:
2 bags each weighing up to 32 kg (70lbs)
Premium Economy Class:

SWISS Golf Traveller Members:
1 golf bag

From/ to Japan (8); From/to West- and Central Africa (2/3); between South Africa and the United States, Canada (4); Between the United States, Canada, Mexico and Afghanistan, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Yemen (8); Journeys starting in the United States and flying to India (5); Journey start in Canada and destination in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Albania (4); journeys starting in India and flying to the United States, Canada (4); Journey Origin in Colombia (6); Star Alliance Around-the-World ticket (7)

2= Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Cameroon, Cape Verde Islands, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (Kinshasa), Ivory Coast, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda.

3= Not applicable to stopovers (i.e. if you receive your baggage again en route) – except to/from the USA or Canada (here irrespective of stopovers).

4= Applies only to routes via Europe. Applies to the whole journey regardless of stopovers.

5= Applies only to/from Lufthansa destinations in the United States (Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Charlotte, New York, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit, Miami and Orlando) and only for routes via Europe. Applies to the whole journey regardless of stopovers.

6= Applicable for the entire journey irrespective of possible stop-over en-route but not applicable to Destinations in North/Central America.

7= Only applies to tariffs designated as follows: ' YRWSTAR1',' YRWSTAR2' and 'YRWSTAR3'.

8= Applies to the whole journey regardless of stopovers.

9= Applies to Premium Economy Class and Economy Class.
Large items of baggage
Please note that the maximum size per item does not exceed 158cm (length + width + height). Fees* will apply for bags that go over the free baggage allowance either in dimensions or weight. The same regulations apply to other items of baggage.

Basic rules
Sports baggage is carried free of charge** under the free baggage regulations (number/weight of bags).

Registering sports baggage: up to 24 hours before departure via the reservation hotline (+49 (0)69 - 86 799 799). Please specify your booking code.

Exception rules for sports baggage
1. The sports baggage exceeds the free baggage allowance but not the maximum weight. The rules and prices for sports baggage apply (see above).

2. The sports baggage isn’t listed in the sports baggage regulations. Excess baggage charges apply (see above).

3. The sports baggage exceeds the maximum weight of 32 kg. The charges for cargo transport apply.
Should your journey include flights operated by another airline, the baggage regulations may vary.

* Please note that in a number of countries a service charge may be incurred, in addition to the flat fee, for checking in excess baggage.
** Where applicable, country-specific surcharges will be levied for sports baggage.
Weight restrictions
For all tickets a maximum travel weight of 32 kg per item of baggage applies, irrespective of service class.
Bags which exceed this weight will not be accepted as passenger baggage. You can send them by air freight at air freight rates.
Musical instruments** which weigh more than 32 kg may only be taken on Lufthansa flights after registration and approval.

Children’s free baggage allowance
From the age of two, children have the same free baggage allowance as adults. Children under two have an allowance of one bag up to 23 kg and a folding buggy.
A seat must be booked for any child who will turn two during the journey. Please note that the date of the return flight is the determining factor for the age limit.
Child safety seats can be carried free of charge provided that the model is approved and the child is travelling on a child’s fare and in a booked seat. For child seats that are not approved, the usual free baggage allowance and excess baggage charges apply.
HAND LUGGAGE
First Class:
2 pieces each weighing up to 8 kg
Business Class:
2 pieces each weighing up to 8 kg
Economy Class:
1 piece weighing up to 8 kg
Size and weight:
One piece of hand luggage should not exceed 55 cm x 40 cm x 23 cm in size or 8 kg in weight.
Foldable garment bags:
These count as hand luggage up to a size of 57 cm x 54 cm x 15 cm.
NB: there may be country-specific variations to this rule.
Carriage of prams, wheelchairs or mobility aids
At most airports you can keep your pram, baby buggy, wheelchair or other mobility aid, on which you are dependent, until you board the aircraft.
We will carry a folding buggy or a Moses basket free of charge. Prams are transported in the hold.
Passengers with limited mobility can check in two wheelchairs or other mobility aids without it affecting their free baggage allowance. Please find out about our services for people with special needs.
Your pram or wheelchair will be returned, wherever possible, as soon as you disembark from the aircraft or in the passenger boarding bridge. Please note that the hand-over location can vary depending on local circumstances at your destination airport.
Foodstuffs of animal origin for personal consumption
If entering the European Union, please be aware of the regulations for the import of products of animal origin (e.g. meat, milk) for personal consumption and of products made from them.
